The first stage on the Sentiero del Viandante starts at the church of San Martino di Abbadia and wraps up at Lierna on Via Genico. From Via Nazionale we climb the staircase that brings us to the church of San Martino, where a sign indicates the beginning of the Sentiero del Viandante, and then we pass the bridge overtop the railway and pass behind the houses of Borbino. After having crossed the bridge over the Zerbo stream and the Mulini area, we arrive at Robbianico where the church of San Bartolomeo rises before us; following this road, we pass under the state road (SS 36) and we turn to the right for the small town of Novegolo.
Leaving the vehicle accessible road, a long panoramic stretch begins that leads to the municipality of Mandello del Lario, afte which the trail then begins to climb upwards and in a short time we reach the cliff where the ancient church of San Giorgio stands. We suggest a stop at the church of San Giorgio, inside of which we can find magnificent XV century frescoes, unparalleled in the world, and in the churchyard there is a splendid panorama of Lake Como. The centuries-old building also marks the border between the municipalities of Abbadia and Mandello. The path ascends towards Zana, and we go on to pass the bridge over the highway and after passing by the cemetery we turn left to enter the village of Maggiana where the famous Torre del Barbarossa sits.
Leaving Maggiana we head up into the woods for a long stretch, and after the pebbly riverbed of the stream we come to the church of San Giacomo in the small town of Rongio, just a little further from which stands the oratory of Sant'Antonio. From Rongio we hike down towards the Ristorante al Verde, taking the path to the right and pass the Meria stream, and—paying attention to the path—we climb down with the help of chains. The path carries on in the direction of Sonvico. After leaving the town, we skirt along the cemetery and continue uphill on the Strada per i Saioli, and then at the top we turn left, heading down towards Galdano where we then continue the walk while keeping the highway to our right. The path crosses meadows and wondrous panoramas, and after passing the villages of Sornico and Olcianico, we’ll find ourselves in Lierna. From Via Chignola, we arrive in Via Genico where the first stage of the Sentiero del Viandante ends.
In this area you can make many excursions and trips: in Linzanico starts the trail that in about three hours of walking gets to Resinelli Flatland, the Path of the Wanderer starts at Borbino and connected Abbadia to Colico.
